Using the free Google Photo Screensaver

The Google Screensaver is one of the amazing free applications that is part of Google’s free Google Pack software package. Make your PC more useful. Get the free Google Pack.

The Google Screensaver is optional as part of Google Pack, but it’s one component that you should not miss. With it, you can have a screensaver that uses your own photos that you’ve accumulated and edited in Google Picasa, from Picasa Web Albums, from your own photos from folders on your computer that you specify (so you can use some photos as screensaver images, but not others), and from photo feeds (which defaults to “Default Google Photo Feed.”)

You can control how often the picture changes. You can also control the type of transition from one image to the next. The Visual Effect lets you choose Pan and Zoom, Collage, Wipe and Cross-Fade.

You can access the control panel…

Getting A New Computer

Getting a new computer, or your first computer, is not like getting a toaster. You have to decide among many options and buy for the future. Computer For Christmas

A new computer is more like a new car — you need the “dealer prep” (which you can do) before you ever take it out for a spin on the Internet…

Buy the computer. Set it up. Make your recovery CDs. Get your firewall, your antivirus, your antispyware all operational. Then, surf the Internet or do email.

IE7 Vulnerability to Phishing Attack

Security researchers at Secunia have discovered and reported another vulnerability with the newest version of Internet Explorer - IE7, as reported in heise Security’s blog.

First there was the IE7 security hole that allowed attackers to spy on the contents of other open windows on the computer.

Now, Secunia is reporting that attackers can fake the address shown in a popup window’s address bar. This means that new feature of IE7, which has been touted for its huge security improvements, to display an address bar on popup windows can now be a misleading, phishing tool rather than just having a popup that doesn’t show an address.

I expect Microsoft to have a fix for this one soon — hopefully by the time they push IE7 out to all Windows XP users as a Critical Update (scheduled for November 14th).

IE7 Is Coming…

Internet Explorer 7 is coming our way quickly — at least, if we use Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server or a Windows Vista beta. If you are using Windows 2000 or anything prior to that, you won”t (and can”t) get IE7.

I read today that IE7 — the real thing, not a beta version — will be available for download on Tuesday, October 18th and that it will be a high-priority update through Windows Update and Microsoft Update in the November updates from Microsoft.

Why do we want it?

  • Security
  • Compatibility with Standards

IE7 has a huge number of security improvements and a few usability improvements. It”s also the first real update in about 4 years in terms of the browser functions, although XP Service Pack 2 had some security fixes (like blocking ActiveX downloads by default (anything before IE6 XP SP2 gets automatic downloads of ActiveX programs just by going to a web site).

To install, the IE team recommends temporarily disabling your anti-spyware, anti-adware and anti-virus applications. This is probably necessary, since one of the things that these types of programs do to protect your computer is to monitor and prevent changes to some Windows Registry keys related to Internet Explorer.
