Terry’s Computer Tips newsletters August 29th

This week’s online newsletter includes:

  • Reducing Frustration by Changing the Windows 7 User Access Control Settings

I wish there were a few more settings options in the Windows 7 User Access Control (UAC) Settings dialog box.

Some programs, especially utility programs, trigger the UAC warning every time I start them manually, but not if started as a Windows Service or started by the Windows scheduler or Windows startup routines.

  • A Look at Acronis True Image Home 2011 | Acronis True Image Home 2011 Review

I was impressed. Acronis True Image Home 2011 was released on Tuesday this week. I bought a copy on Wednesday for my desktop, and so I could do the review. On Thursday, I bought three more licenses — for my notebook, my other desktop and my wife’s computer. Yep, I liked it…

  • Sorting the Windows 7 All Programs Menu — and Organizing it, too

A subscriber wrote to ask about a problem with the Windows 7 All Programs menu-list. He wanted to know: "I’m running Win7 and one of the things I find annoying is when you have to go to the program menu window and search from top to bottom on what I consider a unorganized list. How to I setup the list in alphabetical order?

  • My Security Software Recommendations

My recommendations for anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, anti-spam software, system control software and backup software.

I’ve also included my recommendations for wired and wireless routers, as well as add-on USB Wireless-N adapters.

Terry’s Computer Tips newsletters August 22nd

This week’s online newsletter includes:

  • Finding Program Data and Configuration Files in Windows 7

Windows 7 implemented a bunch of new security features to protect Windows and the programs that were installed on the computer. It also implemented a lot of improvements to the usability and user-friendliness of the security controls that were added to Windows Vista.

One of the new controls is that programs are not permitted to write to any subdirectories under C:\Program Files (assuming you have Windows installed to drive C:).

  • Getting Control of Firefox’s Location Bar Suggestions

Do you get annoyed at Firefox’s address "location bar" — you know, the place you type the web address (URL) to which you want to go?

Firefox has long included a suggestion system that offered destinations based on the letters as you typed them. Before version 3, Firefox showed only those sites that you had recently visited (the ones stored in your Firefox history).

  • Security Update Will Not Install

Subscriber Travis MacClendon wrote with an interesting problem. Fortunately, the solution should be pretty easy…

    Hi Terry,

I’ve been reading and lurking for a few months now and finally have a question perhaps worthy of attention: I get the Microsoft automatic security updates and have never had a problem but recently one has shown up that will not install….Security Update for Microsoft Word Viewer (KB2251437).

This week’s online newsletter includes:

  • Setting VIPRE Antivirus Premium’s Firewall to Trust a Network

I answered a question this week that came from mailing list to which I subscribe. The questioner had received a security popup from VIPRE Antivirus Premium, the antivirus / antispyware / antiadware / firewall security program that I use and recommend. The popup advised that a computer at a specific IP address was trying to make a connection with his computer. It asked whether to allow that connection or not.

  • Virtual Memory & When You Need More Real Computer Memory

New subscriber Yogesh Anand wrote to ask: "This is Yogesh Anand and I just have registered myself on your website and have a query if I could any solution for this, my query is :- Its about "virtual memory" We all know what a virtual memory is, what it does, what is its impact. The problem is that or which I want to know about is what are the symptoms or is there any indication that tells us that it’s the time for increasing the virtual memory?"

  • Computer Can Not Find Printer and Digital Camera

Subscriber Kevin Coughenour has problems with an older Dell computer — his computer can no longer talk to the printer. Similarly, it can not find Kevin’s digital camera (when it’s plugged in <grin>).

  • My Security Software Recommendations

This week’s online newsletter includes:

  • Followup Comments on Reformatting a Laptop Computer

In my online newsletter last week, I answered reader Ken’s question about reformatting his 4-year-old HP laptop computer. Unfortunately, Ken’s computer had not come with a Windows CD. So, he didn’t know how to get started.

Briefly summarizing, I wrote that, if Ken wants to reinstall the Windows XP (I assumed it was XP, although it could have been Vista) that came on his computer originally, he needs to contact HP to get a recovery CD/DVD. If he wants to install a different version of Windows or a version of Linux, the CD/DVD of the new operating system will include the necessary tools.

That article prompted several readers to post comments via my Terry’s Computer Tips blog…

  • Even More Suggestions on Saving Bookmarks and Favorites

In the July 25th issue of Terry’s Computer Tips, I had a question from subscriber Suzanne about saving bookmarks so she could use them on another computer.

Last week’s issue included reader suggestions for more things that Suzanne could do — and this week, there are even more…

  • Email Security When Using Wireless Networking

When you use wireless networking at home, if you haven’t set your wireless router and wireless adapters to use the best encryption they will support (currently WPA2 for most personal wireless devices), you are broadcasting your data unencrypted. That means that anyone who "sniffs" the broadcast signals can read your data.

That data includes web site addresses, passwords (unless the web site provides encryption for that portion of the data), other web site data that you send and that the web site sends to you (unless the web connection is an https:// secure connection), your email server names, email address, email password, and more. So, most people make the appropriate step and set their home wireless router and adapters to encrypt the transmissions.

The snag comes when you use public wireless access points…

  • My Security Software Recommendations

My recommendations for anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, anti-spam software, system control software and backup software. It also includes my recommendations for wired and wireless routers, as well as add-on USB Wireless-N adapters.

  • Saving Bookmarks and Favorites for Portable Use with Other Computers
Subscriber Suzanne Veilleux wrote with a great question about which I had not previously written — she wanted to make a file of some of her Bookmarks/Favorites for use with a USB drive when she uses someone else’s computer. But, she didn’t want all of here Bookmarks…
  • Another User Hits the "Wall" With Outlook Express
I’ve written about this problem a lot of times — it seems like almost all Outlook Express users are hitting that wall now, which kind of makes sense because of the amount of time they’ve been using OE.
  • Making an Incremental Backup with Acronis True Image Home 2010
Reader David Forness had a problem with Acronis True Image Home 2010 that turned out to be a "feature" — the ATIH icon in the Windows Status Bar is only there when the program is triggered to run a scheduled backup. At other times, ATIH’s icon is not in the Status Bar.

Unfortunately, David’s question to Acronis’ tech support wasn’t interpreted correctly (it took several emails with me for me to understand what he was trying to do), so they answered the "wrong" question.
