Bob,

Your Internet Explorer 8 is running under the Internet Options settings available under Tools > Internet Options > Security.

Select the zone for "Trusted sites" and click the Sites button. Add the IE Updates website. You should be able to do that by clicking the Add button in the dialog box.

Hi Terry, MS installed IE 8 a few weeks ago, and it now blocks every download, even updates. The last security update I had was in August - please see attachment. IE 8 is absoltely useless to me under these circumstances and I don't understand what it' s all about. Group Policy?

I am the Administrator, only I use this PC, and I am not on a network. Old pensioner with his toy!
All the best, Bob, and thank you for the steady stream of good stuff!

Positine side: good looking, stable and fast. A HUGE improvement, if one could get to use it.

Dear Terry, I've been a subscriber of yours for a year or more. I have had no problems but my wife has a problem with IE8.

She runs a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed (32bit).

Until yesterday she had had no problems with IE, which she uses as her default browser, she also has FireFox. Microsoft updates advised her of the new updates for her PC so she OKed them to install. The download reached 80% & then her computer crashed. It has taken 2 days & 4 or 5 attemts to get it installed. We hoped that would fix the problem but it hasn't.

When she tries to open IE it takes a long time to start & just as soon as the window opens IE crashes. We have tried to uninstall it & start a fresh install. We have been unable to uninstall IE
as it doesn't appear in Windows Installed programs from where we expected to be able to uninstall it. It does appear in the All Programmes list but there is no uninstall option.

I advised her to install Revo Uninstaller which she did but even then IE doesn't appear in the list of programmes on her PC! So we couldn't uninstall it from there either.

She downloaded a new copy of IE & saved it but when we went to run it the installer said there was a more recent version already installed & refused to continue. She can no longer use IE.

Do you have any idea what we can do to fix this problem & get IE running for her again?

This happened BEFORE SP2 for Vista was installed but after the laptop crashed while downloading SP2.I thought the update would fix the problem but it hasn't.

Sorry for being long winded & thanks for your help.

Hi Terry,

I saw that you mentioned only using IE7 to check for web compatibility. I found an awesome toolset for webmasters. It allows you to run "sandboxed" versions of several different browsers.

You can download all of them from this page using the green icons in each little window.

Thanks for the great review of IE8. I'm sure you won't mind if I mention it in my own newsletter soon.

Best wishes

Thanks for the suggestions so far on the alarm problem.
James, I've been through the registry looking for 'alarm' and found nothing (regedit/view/find/alarm). If there's anything else I could do I'd appreciate instructions as that's all I know how to do.
Fastfreddie, I can set an alarm that will start later, but the problem is that my computer wakes up at 6am. And it stays on until the alarm goes off to wake me up. This is fine now, since I need to be up at 6 anyway, but there's the odd morning I get to sleep in, and there's always the problem of my work hours changing. I need to get rid of the ghost task that's starting my computer at 6am, and I can't do that if I can't find it. And that's the crux of this whole thing - get rid of that ghost task.

Terry -

Why should I upgrade from Foxit Reader 2.2 to 3.0? Or is it a downgrade? Foxit Reader 2.2 does every thing I need. I have read a lot of comments about Foxit Reader. I tried the 3.0 Version and went back to the 2.2 Version.

I notice that PDFCreator is doing the same thing. I am using 0.9.0.3. I tried the 0.9.7. I uninstalled and loaded the older version.
