I finally got things straightened out. Adobe tech support claims that the problem is not with Adobe Reader 8.0 nor any of their other programs. Rather they insist it is a problem of interference due to settings on an individuals PC. Regardless by going to program Files/Common Files/ Adobe. Then click on Adobe and you’ll get several read only files plus one titled updater. Delete that updater folder. Immediately the adobe process disappeared. Now if I wish to update any of the adobe products I use I go to the Adobe download web site and perform that task manually.
