Erase Search History With WinClear

WinClear is a computer history cleaner program designed to delete or erase the history of your activity on your computer. Obviously, it can”t dig into the guts of every program to find and delete the history each might retain (and you probably would not want that).

WinClear targets general Windows items, recent document lists in many programs, chat history, and all sorts of data that Internet Explorer records on your use of IE.

How Do I Create A Web Page?

Many people are interested in creating a web page but have no idea how to get started. Whether you want to put up some digital photos so the cousins can see the family, brag about that big fish, or put up a business or personal interest site, it”s easy to do.

One easy way, although it generates pretty messy HTML code, is to design your page in Microsoft Word — or almost any other word processor. Then, when saving it, choose “Save as Web Page.” Be sure to name it index.htm, as that is used as the name for the default webpage on almost any web server.

You could buy a copy of Microsoft FrontPage, but that”s kind of expensive, especially for a beginner. There are also some free editors that you can download - both text editors designed for web page creation and WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors.

Adobe Reader Versions and When to Upgrade

A subscriber wrote with a question about Adobe Reader, the program that reads .pdf files:

I have Acrobat Reader 5.0 and lately couldn”t open some things. After being “advised” to download a later version, I got 6.0 downloaded but not installed. Then I saw info about 7.0 today. I”d REALLY like some advice about the best reader to use (Adobe Acrobat or other)and any tips to make it work most efficiently. The reviews I read only confused me. I just want to be able to read PDF files–not do any other fancy stuff.

Adobe Reader 7 is the best and greatest version and has some security fixes, too. If you are on XP, you can run 7. Windows 98 and Me are stuck at version 6. I don”t think you can even get v5 at Adobe any mo although old install CDs used to include v3, v4 or v5.

“Publisher could not be verified” warnings

A subscriber wrote to ask:

Terry,
Being self trained to my pc, I am always wanting to learn more information. I was pleased to learn from you about OpenOffice.org. Although, I during the download, I received a warning the publisher could not be recognized. (firewall protection) I chose not to run it, hoping you could give me a word of confidence or of encouragement.
Thanks,
Ann Petree

That”s a new Microsoft validation scheme that many publishers of free software don”t want to pay for or in which they don”t want to participate.
