Terry’s Computer Tips — Special Edition April 19th

Subscribers to my free computer tips email newsletter received another Special Edition today.

I normally publish my newsletter on Sunday, but for several weeks, I have been publishing Special Editions on Wednesdays, too.

The Special Editions include early looks at new web pages — pages that are not listed or linked on my Terry”s Computer Tips web site yet. I also usually include an additional article or two.

This issue”s article was about the problems that one of last week”s security updates caused on HP computers and computers with some HP peripherals.

Windows HTTP authentication - IE7

I hadn”t noticed this Windows Update before — it”s not a “Critical Update.”

Update for Windows XP (KB904942)
Typical download size: 151 KB , less than 1 minute
Install this update to resolve HTTP authentication issues in Windows-based systems that do not appear until Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is installed. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

There are two other categories of Window Updates, Software Optional and Hardware Optional. By the way, I learned the hard way not to do the “Hardware, Optional” ones.

In my case, this was a generic RAID driver for the motherboard”s chipset. Unfortunately, the motherboard apparently didn”t have the standard chipset — and I ended up with an unbootable computer. Thank goodness this happened during my initial updates after installing Windows XP. Never again…

IE6 SP1 browser..links take long time to download
My computer contains: Athlon 3200gb, 1 gig Ram, I have WinXP SP2 Home, and IE 6 SP1. When I click on a link in my OE e-mail, I am immediately taken to the web-site. When on a web-site, and I click on a link within the site, it takes “forever” to download the page…

Dlink in the news over time checks

DLink, manufacturer of a number of home networking products, is in the news, but not in a good way.

The BBC”s web site reported today:

Home network hardware supplier D-Link has been accused of harming the net”s ability to tell the time accurately.

Detective work has found that many D-Link routers, switches and wireless access points are bombarding some net time servers with huge amounts of data.
